It’s easy to make a headband for your doll. Our headband features a giant silk flower. But you can use lots of different odds and ends like feathers, beads or buttons to make yours unique.

Recently, my mother brought this silk Hawaiian lei home from a party. (shown in the photo below) I decided to recycle it. I used 5 layers of the silk flower petals to make the big flower on each doll’s headband. There are 2 medium-colored layers on top, 2 dark-colored layers in the middle and one light-color on the bottom. I gathered them up in the center with a hand-basting stitch and sewed them on to an elastic band.

It takes about 12 inches of elastic to go around an American Girl dolls head. I used white elastic for the blonde and black elastic for the brunette, but you could also match the band to your doll’s outfit.

The secret to planning great looking accessories is to look at the doll clothes patterns you’re about to make, and find items that compliment the fabrics and colors you’re using.

The headband has lots of popular variations. This year, with the anniversary of Woodstock in the news, the forehead band is back in style too. Maybe you should celebrate Woodstock with retro-styled doll clothes patterns in updated tie-dye looks.

The oversized handbag has replaced the backpack as the new ‘must have’ fashion item. It’s seen in many shapes; like the hobo bag, the oversized tote and the mailbag. Bags with drawstring tops and heavy hardware trim are also popular. You’ll want to look for these design details when you translate the new fashion trends into your doll clothes patterns.

Girls today are influenced by the styles they see other kids wearing in magazines and on TV. So, for a ‘total look,’ you should always select doll clothes patterns that include doll accessories… like handbags, shoes, hats and jewelry.

Although our blog discussions will usually focus on sewing unique fashion-forward outfits from doll clothes patterns, sometimes a creative, money-saving idea is just too good to overlook.

If you can find a package of Saran brand Quick Covers hidden away in your kitchen or pantry, you’ll have a cute shower cap for your 18-inch doll. These plastic covers were manufactured to fit assorted sizes of food-storage containers. The medium size fits Julie, our American Girl doll, perfectly.

You won’t find Quick Covers in the stores now, because Saran doesn’t make them any more. However, they’re still available on eBay. There are also similar products sold online that are made by other manufacturers. Just do a search for “Quick Covers” on Google or eBay.

It’s quick and easy to sew a ‘doll-sized’ terrycloth bath towel to complete this outfit. You won’t even need doll clothes patterns. Just cut a rectangle (18 inches X 9 inches) from one of your old bath or hand towels and hem it on four sides. If you can’t find any old towels buried in the back of your linen closet, it’s fairly easy to find nice quality used towels at your local ‘odds and ends’ or thrift store. You could also recycle an old terry cloth robe instead of throwing it away.

Sewing notes:
The towel measurements (18 X 9) allow ½ inch on all sides to turn back for a rolled hem. To make a rolled hem turn the fabric down ¼ inch, then turn it down another ¼ inch to create a roll, so no raw edges show. Your finished doll’s towel will measure about 17 inches long by 8 inches wide.
